Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story

We spent another inspiring Sunday together as a family when we attended the Bread of Life service in Makati.  The talks that we get to hear whenever we attend the service never cease to amaze us, and they never fail to energize us in facing the new challenges of the coming week.

Last Sunday, the talk given by the Coach (as they call the speaker) was very inspiring and it was a blessing that all my kids were with us, because normally, Faye would be in the Bible School, but since she had fever, we decided not to allow her to join the other kids, so she was with us during the main talk.

I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the movie Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story.  Some clips of this movie was shown by the  Coach during her talk.  It was really very inspiring and its message will really touch anyone’s heart. It was the story of a girl who didn’t let her past ruin her future.  She grew up in a distorted family, with parents who were both drug addicts, and who later died of AIDS.  You couldn’t help but cry when you watch her mother grabbing the money (to buy cocaine), that she and her sister saved to buy food, while her father was busy  watching TV, ignoring them.  This didn’t stop her from standing up on her own, studying hard, finishing high school in just 2 years, and eventually winning a scholarship to Harvard courtesy of The New York Times.  When she was asked during the awarding of the scholarship if there was anything that she will change in her life if she will be given the chance, her reply was, she will give it all back — everything, just to get her family back.
You can watch the entire movie in YouTube, but if you have kids, make sure to watch it with them, because it will really help in instilling in them the value of perseverance in the face of adversities.
