When children reach the age of adolescence, it is every parent’s fear that their child might learn to drink alcohol or worse, get into drugs. A very strong emotional foundation needs to be set within your kids, so that they won’t easily succumb to peer pressure when they reach their teenage years. It is so sad to hear parents trying to have their kids undergo drug rehab, but there’s no other way for them to correct their ways once they have reached this point, otherwise, their life will just go to waste. It would have been a lesser evil if you only need to have your child undergo alcohol rehab, because alcohol treatment would be much easier than drug treatment. But, as I have said, it’s just a lesser evil. No parent would want their child to undergo either of the two, because they could have long term effects on the child, that could surface later on in their lives. It would be much nicer to raise your child in your home, rather than spend time in alcohol treatment center, and eventually, help them in trying to pick-up the pieces of their lives.
This is where having a strong family foundation comes in. This is the reason why it’s very important that we all have a strong relationship with our children. It is also very important that we know what’s going on in their lives, that we know who their friends are, and that we relatively know how they spend their free time away from home. All these can be done through good communication with them. We shouldn’t wait until a problem arises before we involve ourselves in our children’s lives, because if we do this religiously and consistently, they wouldn’t notice anything different if we suddenly become interested in what’s going on in their lives. They would just feel it’s perfectly normal, and they wouldn’t resent us, and will instead be more open for communication. This would lead to them having a perfectly normal life, away from the temptation of drugs and alcohol, because they themselves will be confident and assertive enough to deny themselves of those abusive temptations.
