A Kids’ Camp Like No Other

This is a long-overdue post. It’s back-to-school already and yet here I am posting about the Kids’ Camp which Faye joined last April.  There were just too many activities during the summer vacation that I didn’t have the time to write about everything.

Anyway, this Kids’ Camp was organized by my brother-in-law’s church community, the Bread of Life Ministries.  Faye attends the Sunday School activities in the church so, more or less, she has already developed friendship among other kids who also attend the church’s Sunday activities.  So, when I told her that there’s a scheduled Kids’ Camp, she was very excited, especially when I told her that Kyla — her favorite cousin, will also attend.  It was last March when I told her that, and she couldn’t contain her excitement over it, she couldn’t wait for 23 April to come because she said it was going to be a great bonding time for her and Kyla.  But then, we explained to them that it wasn’t going to be an all-out bonding time for them, because there would be lots of activities, prayer time, group work, and they wouldn’t have so much extra time anymore to spend with each other, and aside from that, their Tita Esphie told them that they were going to be put in separate groups, since they have to mingle with other kids also.  When they heard this, it somehow lessened their excitement, but only for a short time. They still considered it to be a lot of fun because it would be the first time that they would be away for 3 days and 2 nights, and together at that!

So, when the day itself came, they were very excited, and  Faye didn’t mind that she had to wake up very early at 4:00am, because she needed to be at her Tita Esphie’s place by 5:00am.  It was Kyla’s first time to be away from her parents, so, her Mommy was somewhat very emotional when the time came that they had to bring Kyla to the venue. But Kyla was too excited to notice that — and that’s always the case with kids!
During the camp, I didn’t call or text Ate Esphie (who was part of the service team for the camp), to ask how Faye was doing, because I knew that she would be alright. She’s a little independent for her age, and I knew that she would have fun doing the group activities that she wouldn’t even notice that we didn’t have the chance to talk for 3 days.
On their last day, the parents were requested to fetch the kids and to watch the program especially prepared for the parents.  The theme of the camp was “Pilipino Ako” or “I am a Filipino”, so the kids were asked to bring Filipiniana Costume to be worn during the program.  I was telling Faye to bring the costume that she always wear during her school activities, but she refused. She said she just wanted to wear the wrap-around Malong. So, when they came back from Antipolo, where the camp was held, she was already wearing the Malong, then I noticed that I forgot to bring the beaded lanyards that I had prepared at home, which would have been a perfect match to her costume, but since it was too late, we had to make do with what we had at that time.
Each group was tasked to prepare something for the parents, and when it was Faye’s group’s turn, their performance was  well-applauded by the appreciative crowd of parents and guardians.

Faye learned a lot of things, from being more independent, to taking care of her own things, taking care of herself, engaging in group activities which required teamwork, sitting and keeping still long enough to listen to short talks, and learning the meaning of prayer and devotion.  She even got the Most Obedient Award! She also had lots of fun.  I knew it, because right after the program, when the speaker announced the venue of the next Kids’ Camp, she asked us if she could join again, and who are we to refuse, when we knew that she gained lots of friends, and learned a lot of things from this year’s camp?
