Pahiyas Festival in Lucban, Quezon

The Pahiyas Festival in Lucban, Quezon is celebrated every 15th of May,  so, this year, since it fell on a weekend, we decided to visit it again, and this time we asked my sister-in-law and her family to join us.  The last time we went there was in 2004, and the kids  really loved the  very festive atmosphere and decorated houses.
Since we were worried that we’ll get caught in heavy traffic again just like what happened to us when we went to Malarayat Golf and Country Club last May 1, we planned to leave the house at 4:00am, but ended up leaving at 5:00am. Our meeting place was at Petron Station in SLEX, and we arrived there just before 6:00am.  Due to a fire in Muntinlupa  that started at 4:00am, and which razed 1,000 houses, my sister-in-law and her family were caught in a heavy traffic, and it was a blessing that we planned to leave early because otherwise they wouldn’t make it to our meeting place, since they heard in the news that SLEX was closed to vehicles at around 8:00am.  Anyway, all’s well that ends well.  We were on the road at around 7:30am.  The traffic that we encountered was the usual slowing of vehicles just before reaching the toll gate, but after that it all went smoothly.

We reached Lucban at around 11:00am, and had our lunch before going around the place.  The heat was unbearable, umbrellas, shades and caps were not enough.  At first, my  father-in-law and my mother joined us and they were also fascinated with all the decors, and the parades, but later, we decided to ask them to just rest and stay in the restaurant where we had our lunch.  We were worried that they might suffer from heat stroke due to the severe heat.
As compared to the last time that we went there, I think there were fewer people this year, and the decorated houses were also lesser, and not so elaborate. My kids also noticed it.  But for first timers, the houses were still a sight to behold, that’s why there were still lots of tourists who visit the place.

Lucban is famous for its longanisa, so of course, we wouldn’t leave the place without buying 2 kilos of it.

Lucban is also famous for pancit habhab.  You can also see this being sold by sidewalk vendors, and it is ideally eaten by mouth, without using a fork.

We also visited the church, where people rested and pray, and to take refuge from the intense heat outside.

Part of our itinerary was to also go to Kamay ni Hesus Shrine, but when we were told by the locals that the only way to go there was to take the main road — where the major festivities were being held, and where the carabao parade was being held —- we had no choice but to cancel that plan.
We left Lucban at 3:30pm,  and arrived in Pagsanjan at around 5:30pm.  After having late snacks and early dinner in Jollibee, we made a side trip to Liliw, Laguna, to visit the stores there well-known for slippers and shoes.  We were not disappointed, the prices were really low as compared to those in the Malls.
On our way home, traffic was heavy in Los, Banos, and since my husband was already very tired with all the driving, I offered to take his place, so he could rest.  I didn’t know that it will be a torturous 2 hours of traffic!  We reached home at exactly 12:00 midnight, and it was my turn to have a burning back ache!  But, still it was worth the trip, and another bonding time with the family!
