One of the projects that you should have during summer vacation is to de-clutter your home. It’s difficult to do this during school days, because of the continuous piling up of school materials, school projects, papers, pens and pencils. Summer vacation is also the best time to arrange the books and notebooks that your kids have used during the past school year. You can donate them to different charities, or to public schools which will find a need for those textbooks. Although nowadays, textbooks also serve as workbooks, so, they’re not really recyclable in terms of letting your younger kids re-use them. So, when you donate them to other schools, or to charities, the idea would be to use them only as reference materials and not as actual workbooks because for sure, all the activities in the book have been filled-up already by its previous owner.
Another area in which there are lots of ways to de-clutter would be the toys that your kids own. Kids toys are very easy to sort and you can easily identify which ones you can donate or throw or keep. But, just as it’s easy to sort them, most of the time, it’s also very difficult to convince kids to part ways with their toys, let alone, their favorite toys. So, you should make sure that you consult them first, because you wouldn’t want to hear them crying and wailing after you decided to donate or throw some of their toys, without asking them first.
For young kids, you can turn this into a fun project, and remember that they have short attention span, so make it a short activity and just schedule another one for the next day. For older kids, they’ll have more clutter, so allocate a longer time for them to sort their things and to identify which ones should go and which ones should stay. You should also set some rules because you might end up with still having more clutter than when you’ve started. Remind them that those that they identified as “Should Stay” should be put to good use, and should not be seen just lying around their room.
It’s not too late yet, you can still set aside a specific date and time for this project. And remember, turn it into a fun activity so that you’ll get a 100% support from your kids.
