Summer Boredom

The Internet provides a treasure trove of fun (and free!) activities for your kids.  These sites come in handy especially during the summer vacation when the kids are all at home, bombarding you with “Mommy, I’m bored!”.
Here are some websites that can you help get back your sanity whenever your kids recite this never-ending mantra that they’re bored.
  1. nickjr.com:  This the official website of Nickeledon, the activities are organized by age, category (e.g., cooking, crafts) and show. You’ll also find parenting tips (like “Potty Training the Blues Clues Way,” with printable lyrics to Blue’s Toilet Song) and online games.
  2. pbskids.org: More coloring pages, online games and story books for popular characters like Clifford, Jakers and Barney.
  3. crayola.com: More than 1,000 downloadable coloring pages. Its crafts database is huge; search for the perfect craft by filling in the fields for activity, theme, and art material. Also has interactive games like “Catch the Rainbow Trout” and handwriting sheets to help kids practice their letters.
  4. dltk-kids.com: Features printable crafts, coloring pages, holiday projects, and educational themes. The site was created by a mom, whose kids are her “official craft testers.” Aside from links to Blue’s Clues and Pokemon (over 200 pictures to color!) it also has a Bible crafts and Countries Crafts (to learn about different cultures).
  5. Janbrett.com: Over 3,910 pages of free activities, coloring pages, and projects. The whimsical drawings of hedgehogs and other animals will appeal more to older children (or moms who want an excuse to color). You can also download calendars, book plates, alphabet flash cards, and templates for murals.
  6. sesameworkshop.org:  Go to Sesame Street and click coloring pages for an alphabet that your child can color and then post on the wall.
  7. squiglysplayhouse.com: While the downloadable drawings are crude, the site offers variety: brain teasers, crossword puzzles, riddles, jokes. You can print the drawings or color them on screen with the simple software.
  8. nationalgeographic.com/kids/games: Find coloring pages, experiments, maps, storybooks, quizzes, puzzles, and virtual tours of monuments and natural landmarks.
These websites will surely give your kids a lot of things to do.  Aside from being educational, the activities featured in these site will also boost their creativity and motor skills.
